Why Home Recording Boot Camp instead of a bigger, long term recording school?
Our Program offers a logical alternative to these bigger schools. The truth is that new jobs in recording are almost non-existent these days and most musicians with their own studios are not looking to get entry level jobs at studios; they are trying to make better recordings on their own.
The bigger schools spend hundreds of hours training students on high end consoles and other equipment that they will probably never touch after leaving the school. These schools can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars and take up to a year or more to complete. In many cases they are training students to be assistants rather then engineers or producers. Home Recording Boot Camp focuses only on skills that can be applied directly to better home recordings and requires a time and financial investments that are well within the reach of most musicians.
On the other hand, Home Recording Boot Camp is also a great place for a student considering attending one of the larger recording schools to give them a taste of recording education before taking the plunge. It can also provide a head start on the competition at a larger, long term recording school or teach graduates of these programs many of the core skills that some of the larger schools neglect. Furthermore, all of the instructors at Home Recording Boot Camp are experienced professional engineers with years of experience, unlike many other recording schools where many classes are taught by teachers with virtually no real world experience.
Who teaches the workshops?
Courses are primarily taught by Ronan Chris Murphy, a producer/mixer/engineer, who has worked around the globe with some of the greatest musicians in the world. Check out his discography. Additionally, the six day boot camps include workshops by other top engineers in their fields. Instructors at Home Recording Boot Camp are never amateurs or academics. If they are teaching at Home Recording Boot Camp, you know they will be serious professionals with prestigious backgrounds and mojor label credits. Check out the staff page to see biographies of current instructors.
Do you think that big recording schools are a scam?
No, we are not saying that is the case, but I think that when considering going to one of these places, you should do a lot of research and find out exactly what you are getting into and decide whether or not it is a good investment. I will say that if some one at one of these schools tells you that there are a lot of music career opportunities available for graduates, or that they can guarantee job placement in a music recording job then they are probably ignorant or lying. The feedback I get from graduates of these schools is that most of their instructors had no significant real world experience (many were just graduates of the school, then started teaching after graduation). Most graduates feel that they had not made a good investment by spending tens of thousands of dollars at these schools. Keep in mind that many of these schools include internships as part of total course training hours. An internship means that you go and work at some commercial music or audio related business for free (and not necessarily in recording). So if we take a school with a $13,500USD tuition for a 900 hour program and 280 hours of this is an internship, then you are paying $4200USD to go work some where for free! (These are actual figures from one of the more famous recording schools).
What size are the classes?
The six day program has a maximum of six students. A two day program will usually have between 5 -10 studenets.
What are the requirements for admissions into Home Recording Boot Camp?
Programs are open to students of any age or experience, but each workshop is geared towards a specific level of student, and the six day courses require a phone interview to make sure the student and the course are a good match. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about what course would be best for you. Applicants under the age of 18 should contact us first for prior approval. The programs are taught in English but open to students from all over the world and the facilities are handicap accessible.
Where are the classes taught?
The large majority of our courses are held in our Los Angeles facility. We occasionally get to schedule programs in other locations which in the past have included the Cascade Mountains of Washington and the North of Italy.
Is financing available?
Home Recording Boot Camp does not offer its own financing, but accepts all major credit and debit cards through Pay Pal.
Is it possible to attend Home Recording Boot Camp part time?
No. When you are at Home Recording Boot Camp you are living and breathing recording. The programs are fun and intense and all consuming.
Is there housing available for out of town students?
We do not have on site housing but there are several options for quality hotels at good prices near by. We can provide students with informations about local hotels and various price points.
Does Home Recording Boot Camp have an internship program?
Internships can be a great opportunity for people looking to learn more about life in a commercial studio. We can offer assistance to our best students looking to get an internship but we do not have a placement program. One note on internships: if you are considering attending another recording program, note that many of them include internships when they calculate total number of course hours. You could actually be paying a school money to work at a commercial business for free.
